The 6 most powerful words in networking

Only a few words can create an instant connection between people and can be powerful tools in networking writes Danny Rubin in an article for Business Insider.

He gives an example for this with the help of the following conversation: “Hey, did you hear Mark Zuckerberg announced an update to Facebook's privacy settings?

‘When?’

In May.

‘Why?’

Because people have complained for a long time the settings are too confusing. So the company made a change.

‘How?’

Now, new users of the site will have privacy settings default to Friends, instead of Public, which had been the case for many years.

‘Why?’

You ask a lot of questions, don't you?

‘Ha, yeah. I guess I do.’”

According to Rubin these short words - WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY, and HOW – are the secrets to networking success. They demonstrate maturity, selflessness, and a natural curiosity, as they prove you can set yourself aside and be genuinely interested in another person's life. The method works for every day conversations the same way as it does for networking events or business meetings, he claims. He also recommends letting the other person guide the conversation and jumping on opportunities when they present themselves.

Sample questions could be: What kind of projects are you working on? Or: When did you decide to focus on that aspect of your career? Or: Where do you go most often for work?

With each question, the conversation is transported to a deeper and more meaningful level which builds trust and sympathy in a relationship. In terms of networking this might just make the difference for a person to help you find a job or establish another important contact for you.
