They have all the same aspects in common:
- They are all ranked highly by the usual ranking publications. Each of these programmes placed in the top 20 in the U.S. News 2017 Best Business Schools rankings for example.
- They are all selective programmes that accept only a small number of applicants – generally less than 25 per cent of applicants.
- They are all internationally well-known names that have excelled in research and business acumen in past years.
The most renowned contender, Harvard Business School, received more than 9,000 applications for its full-time MBA programme in 2015 and 2016. This was ten times as many as the average business school receives. Each year the school only admitted 12 per cent of these applicants to its MBA course.
